Untitled Document Bio~Namaste Jake

The Biography of

Delivering a hybrid of psychedelic indie pop and groove-based funk, fused with strong blues and jazz influences, Namaste Jake are building a reputation as one of Brisbane's most intriguing talents.

This particularly unique sound has evolved from the vastly differing musical backgrounds of guitarist / vocalist Eddie K, drummer Jason Firkin and bassist Kevin Smerdon. This sonic synergy was created when the trio began casually jamming on the banks of the Logan River, midway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, in July 2000.

The potential of the band was realised early when, after only two live performances and less than three months together, they entered the Queensland Rock Awards and were ultimately awarded a Grand Final position. Their unmistakably fresh style and energetic performance proved them to be one of the crowd favourites throughout the event. Fuelled by such encouragement, the trio recorded their debut demo EP in December 2000 which, despite a restrictive budget, was met with enthusiastic local radio support and respectable sales.

Since then, Namaste Jake have played almost every major venue in South East Queensland as well as multitudes of pubs and clubs throughout the state and festivals including a New Year’s Eve set at the 2001 Wordford Folk Fest. Their versatility has afforded them the opportunity to play alongside artists as diverse as Screamfeeder, Frenzal Rhomb, Diana Ah Naid, Primary, Alex Lloyd, and the John Butler Trio. The band's workload has also included television appearances and film soundtracks.

In the midst of this hectic gig schedule, they recorded their second EP. Due for release in early 2002, this EP highlights the band’s characteristic infectious, genre-crossing sound and is expected to enhance Namaste Jake’s reputation for musical innovation.
